Advice needed for newbie!!!

Hi all, i race bmx and 4x in the summer months but in the winter there isnt much happening. Cross looks like the ideal winter sport for me! so here are my questions!

Firstly, i have a specialized sirrus hybrid road bike, how much would i need to adapt this to make a good cross bike or is the geometry all wrong on it? secondly, what is cross like for beginners? i wouldnt even know what would be best to wear or what to expect!! and lastly, what is there in northamptonshire? im based in Kettering but m able to get around and dont mind traveling, i travel country wide for my bmx!!! all advice and help appreciated

Hi!

I'm another BMX racer who's looking to get into Cyclo Cross. I've been a mechanic for a friend who races CX before (inc. at the Masters Worlds!) and love the sport but have been a bit unsure about the best way to get started actually competing myself. I have a very basic MTB I use for commuting and a half decent Trek road bike. I've been told that MTBs are allowed at some CX races, is this true?

Any advice on getting started would be greatly appreciated!
Brian, I was in the Belnheim race. Was my debut and really enjoyed it did you?

Am looking to enter the next round of the Central Cyclo Cross league this weekend - the full hour race this time.

Does anyone know if I can simply turn up on the day on my MTB, pay the £3 temporary membership and race??

Thanks in advance,

Alex.

Lee, here's a link to ALL the central cyclocross league races with postcodes etc.

I have been persueded by my team mates to enter the Novice event at Blenheim and I will see how I go before entering either the Novice (½ hour) or the "real" (1 hour) race at Kettering.

I hope to see you there? You wont be able to miss me, I'll be the moustachioed chap aboard a red Focus Mares in Team MK colours and going slower than everyone else. Please come up and say hi.

@James & Alex, Hi - I have done the first 3 rounds, (I missed Luton this weekend just passed) and enjoyed them all.

I am pretty slow and get lapped but it doesn't matter because the workout is incredible. I don't think you wil have this problem Alex! - congrats on your 2nd place.

and YES, you can turn up and pay on the day and race on a mountainbike, many do - probably about 1/4 of the field in the senior/veteran race were on mtb's at Hemel Hampstead. See you both at Hillingdon then?
It's a date. Will look out for the 'tash and come say hi.

Alex.
