Front Mech for 42/34

My daughter's cross bike is currently set up 46/34 using a 105 front mech. The bottom of the cage sits just above the chainstay on the frame (Kinesis EVO4, 51cm) and everything works reasonably well. Ideally, we'd like to try a 42 big ring but I think that the chain stay will prevent me from getting the cage close enough to the big ring.

How do people manage this? Am I using the wrong front mech, or is it just a quirk of this frame type / size?

try it, it will probably work anyway. Plenty of MTBers take the outer ring off and get the same issue but it always seems to work
