After each race, I was my shoes, then stuff them with newspaper and put them in a warm place to dry - apart from after the WVCC race. As a result of them being left damp, they now have a smell like cat's pee. After yesterday's race at Rhyl, I scrubbed them in a bio detergent and Vanish, with claims to kill bacteria. As they have dried, the odour has returned.

Any suggestions to remedy this nasty problem, please?

No Alan.  Sorry.  None of us have ever experienced that.  It must be only your feet that have this problem.

Sadly, my worst fears have been realised...

Nope, thats never happened to me either...

Try putting them in the washing machine, take off all the bits that go rusty. Dont put them on hot

Anyone would think this is the domestic tips column of Womens Weekly!

I had the same problem with my little lads football boots. I found if I stuck them in the freezer this got rid of any nasty odours. Also great fun watching him put his boots on after taking them out of the freezer!

try putting bicarb of soda [about 10tbsps in each shoes while they're dry] and then put them in the freezer - used to work with my old rugby boots

I heard a rumour that it is something to do with the glue used which is why they react in such a manner. I found neutradol spray works quite well. If not don't sniff your shoes, I sure there's a name for that!

I've tried putting my shoes in the washing machine with Halo Sports Wash http://www.germwarfare.co.uk/index.php/halo/halo-sports/halo-proact...

and it improved them.

i had a pair of shoes with the same problem to stop the smell is simple "put them in the bin" yes thats right the advice of the importer!!!!!. The problem is we cyclists are not a big consumer group and get walked over. Now if we were a big consumer group of sports gear like "chavs" the company involved (nike)would replace them quickly to protect their image. Yes they had the same problem a couple of years ago with a model and thats what they did.
