I've just borrowed a petrol pressure washer, which should be great, but in all the instructions it says to attach toa garden hose, which I guess means it doesn't have its own pump.
Is there a way of making it work without a pressure water supply? I've not even tried turning it on yet.

You don't need the pressure of the mains in hose - the hose is there to get the water into the washer. You need a barrell that has a hose outlet or syphon from a barrell above the washer.

I can't believe we're talking about the ins and outs of pressure washers. 'Cross is a strange thing sometimes...!
that's what I thought/hoped.

Now for a "what water barrel" thread...
Now we're talking - I've seen a wheelie bin with a tap fixed at the bottom, no end of water butts from B+Q on sack trolleys, and plenty of 25L containers stacked on top of each other.
I've got a 50L laboratory aspirator which I've recycled from work. It has a tap on the bottom and sits on a trolley so that the tap and the washer inlet are about the same height. 50L is the limit for dragging it to the pits, or at least that's what the missus insists!
