Hi

I'm new here and have a question about sticking tubs - I had a quick search and couldn't see this specific question covered already -

I did my first couple of CX races last year, and I'm wondering if I need to re-stick my tubs after they've been 'resting' since last winter? They were stored in the house, partially inflated.

They're Tufo Cubus, and I stuck them *only* using Jantex tape last year. Is it worth pulling them off and re-sticking with tape AND glue, as per the guide here?:

I'm just wondering what the general rule of thumb here is about how long the tape stays effective- I know nobody's gonna know how well I stuck them in the first place...

Any help gratefully received!

cheers

I'm no expert but if they have stayed on so far using tape only then you have been lucky. I follow the guide above to the letter and it's rock solid.

Thanks for your help Ian - point taken! Re-sticking it is then. Should I completely clean down the rims, or is it fine to have the residual old glue from the tape still on there?

Simple way at any point of the season is to try and pull them off with your fingers at the seam. Any tub should be incredibly hard to get off if it's been well glued.  If it shows signs of wanting to come away from the rim, it needs reglueing - not matter how recently it was glued.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with tape only, at  least on the road. I could see that lots of mud might affect it in cross but I have never had any problems on the road or have a tub roll. As Dave says, just check they are well stick to the rim. If you do re-glue, definitely get rid of old tape, glue is not so bad and you just need to get rid or large bits of residue. I have used tubs stuck on with tape year after year without any need to re-glue or tape, they'll be fine.

I think I will re-stick anyway, even if it's just for psychological benefit. I guess it's also the fact that with CX tubs you don't have the tyre pressure helping them stay on too (unlike road ones).

After getting the rims second-hand last year, with old glue on, I couldn't bear the scrubbing and scraping to get them completely clean again - but as it's just newish tape on there I guess it shouldn't be such an onerous task this time...

Usually the tape comes off with the tub, so the rim should be clean. It can be a pain getting the tape off the tub and be careful not to pull the tub finishing strip off with the tape! if you do, impact adhesive or tub glue (similar products) is great for sticking it back.

Nice one, thanks Kristian

Cross is a slightly different kettle of fish, Kristian. Try rounding a corner at top speed with 20psi in your tubs on wheels that have been jetwashed repeatedly for a season, then tell me tape only is OK... if you're still upright.  ;-)
I've had the experience of only taping my tubs and the rear came straight off. Glue them!! The residue comes off quite easy with white spirit and a cloth. I find if I wipe around the rims once with the white spirit, it softens it up and will start to clean off

I'm glad I just checked the link for gluing. I just  purchased some vittoria xm which I thought they were faulty as the rim tape pushes sideways when I inflate them. However, the tubs on the link look to do the same. Do these look normal as I was about to send them back!!!?

Totally normal!
