would i be right in assuming if i bought a 10 speed xt cassette and rear mech it would work with my 10 speed ultegra shifters and compact chainset.if so using a 50 34 compact would i need the long or medium cage mech?i saw on dave's blog that nick craig used the xx groupset but this seems a much more affordable option.Ta

Sounds promising - let us know how you get on!
after spending a good hundred pound on an sram apex cassette and rear mech i have found out they are not compatable with shimano shifters.spent all day swapping bike over from traditional campagnolo cross set up to what i thought was bombproof low geared three peaks rig.oh well it looks like i will be trying to get round on 34/29
No it wont be shimano has a 2:1 cable pull ratio and Sram has a 1:1 so they won't work
interesting stuff, having ripped off another new-style Ultegra rear mech today, I think I'm going to give XT Shadow a go instead in a short cage version.

There seems to be a real weakness on Shimano road rear mechs between the main mounting bolt and the stop screws — I'm yet to break a replaceable gear hanger on my Cannondale CX9's but I have broken 2 Ulterga rear mechs the same way, and looking around the detritus at today's London League, I'm not the only one.

Will MTB mechs be the answer? Got to be worth a punt.
An MTB mech might make it worse. Even a short-cage version will be longer than a road mech and so closer to all the crud/twigs/leaves. And it only takes a small misadjustment or a sloppy pivot on a longer cage before it goes into the spokes.

Worth a try though if you're going through that many mechs. Do they still make break-away bolts?
Bet you were on big ring and big sprocket Andy - not being cocky, or judgmental but that's how you rip mechs off. I know - I did two last year.

I'ts annoying that those Cannondale hangers don't break though - they should be the weak point. Nick C reckoned we should hacksaw a weak point into the hangers which was a bit brave to me.

I was actually middle of the block - it was at the bottom of a descent where you turn off a muddy track onto a gravel/stone chip path.
The stones on the path were very loose and the mud on the tyres was flicking them up. I think a stone jammed in the chain and jockey wheels, sending the mech up and over.
MTB shadow mechs have an extra hinge right where my mech snapped, so i'm thinking it might transfer the force to the mech hanger

It seems that you need a 9 speed XT cassette with a 10 speed XT cassette.

I've not tried it myself but have it down for a summer project next year.

(CORRECTION - I meant 9-speed XT mech and 10-speed XT cassette... sorry!)
