I glued one of my tubs yesterday and it got messy..... I got the tyre on the rim but with a fair amount of glue on the sidewall of the tyre and breaking surface of the rim!
Any advice on how to remove it would be greatly appreciated.
Any abuse for being a tub noob is also welcome...!
You can use pure acetone (or nail varnish remover if you can't find it) to remove the glue from the braking surface. Just be careful not to get acetone on the bond around the base tape/bottom edge of tub.
As for the glue on the sidewalls, I would leave it as you might damage the side wall trying to get it off.
Sounds like you may have used too much glue for the final mount. Build up max 3 layers on rim and 1 good layer on basetape of new tubs (allowing at least 12 hours between coats), then mount with a second thinnish layer on basetape first off, then a final thickish layer on rim. Mount tub straightaway without leaving to dry - if you do the final layer on the basetape first it will go a little tacky while you put final layer on rim and you shouldn't get too much glue on you or the tubs :-)

Thanks for the reply, Alan. I used some nail varnish remover for the rim which worked well. I left the sidewall as per your advice. I too think i used too much glue (it was my first time!) and then i think i just got messy when mounting it as it was uber tight (even after stretching both on a rim and using my foot and hands to pull!)...This tyre had been glued once before and i guess i expected it to go on easier!
Again, thanks for the help!
I do them this way ----
if the rim has glue on I use a rag with petrol on to re-activate the glue and remove any build up areas, then give it a coat of thinned out glue..
Give the base tape a coat, then leave for 24 hours...
then I fit the tub to the rim and pump up soft.
I then remove approx 6 inches of the tub sideways from the rim and glue the rim, carrying on all the way round, this way you get nothing on the side walls and any excess glue I remove with a petrol rag
pump up hard after checking that the tub is on true- or as true as you can get it...
