Just been unfortunate enough to roll both front and rear tubs in the same race. On removal the glue had become dry and brittle - fair enough - serves me right for not checking!

But the base tape has come away from the carcass, is there a fix for this? Can it simply be glued back on with tub glue? How do you keep it flat.

Cheers!

I've only ever lost base tape when yanking a tub off but it's annoying isn't it.  In theory, it's just a job for tub glue.  Both surfaces are absorbent and rough (tape to carcass) so my guess is that tub glue should do it but I've never tried.
i wouldnt just glue it, it would definatly roll off again, the tape is normally stiched on to with a strong thread so you should stich it back together then (just like you would when you unpick it to fix a puncture then sew back up) be carful not to stich the tube tho cos you will have punctures to repair!!!

The first layer of base tape is not normally stitched on (depending on tub type). If the base tape has come right off, I would recommend sending it to Pete Burgin   http://www.tubular-repairs.com/ as he will put on a better quality basetape than is likely on there already.

If there are just small sections were it has peeled off, I have successfully used epoxy type glue, or as Dave says tub glue to glue those sections down.

Apparently, when re-fixing base tape, your best bet is "barge cement" (it's the same sort of stuff that cobblers use to stick shoes together) - it's available on American Amazon, but surprisingly difficult to find on this side of the pond. It's a bit tougher than tub cement (even tubasti!) which means when you come to take your tubs off the wheels, the bits you want to stay stuck should! Best of luck with it,

I know very little about cross tubs but have always thought they were the same in construction as normal tubs. I have never come across a tub that has a stitched base tape?? In my experience they are all glued. I have had a few come away and always use impact adhesive. I think tub glue is very similar. Evostick make a good impact adhesive which is readily available from hardware stores and B&Q etc. Apply it to the main tub carcass and then to the base tape, allow to dry then press firmly together and idealy stick it in a vice or with a heavy weight on it overnight. Repaired like this, I have never had any come apart. I have always repaired like this after fixing punctures.

Thanks for the information. The dreaded black Dugast mold has got under the base tapes, I think I'll send to http://www.tubular-repairs.com/ see what Peter can do.
t.he correct adhesive to use for base tapes is Copydex, been using it since the 60's
