There's more stuff on this at: http://www.3peakscyclocross.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=9&start=0 It seems that you need a 9 speed XT cassette with a 10 speed XT cassette. I've not tried it myself but have it down for a…

I was actually middle of the block - it was at the bottom of a descent where you turn off a muddy track onto a gravel/stone chip path. The stones on the path were very loose and the mud on the tyres was flicking them up. I think a stone jammed in…

An MTB mech might make it worse. Even a short-cage version will be longer than a road mech and so closer to all the crud/twigs/leaves. And it only takes a small misadjustment or a sloppy pivot on a longer cage before it goes into the spokes. Worth…

interesting stuff, having ripped off another new-style Ultegra rear mech today, I think I'm going to give XT Shadow a go instead in a short cage version. There seems to be a real weakness on Shimano road rear mechs between the main mounting…

No it wont be shimano has a 2:1 cable pull ratio and Sram has a 1:1 so they won't work

Spot-on Dave- thanks Mega9 rear mech "borrowed" off my tandem indexes perfectly! In summary, mega 9 xt rear mech, xt 11-34 ten speed cassette and Ultegra ten sti work faultlessly

Any Shimano 9 speed MTB mech will to the job of clearing the large sprocket and has the same pull ratio as Shimano road 10 spd

So why not just use a mega-9 MTB mech? Problem solved!
