On One Dirty Disco - first (proper) impressions

You've probably seen the banner ad on this site - On One (~ Planet X) are right there - in at (pretty much) the start with their foot firmly down in the market adapting to disc brakes on cyclocross bikes.  This is amongst the first widely available full carbon race frame with discs to hit the UK Cyclocross Market whilst other industry leaders are still dithering.

I was unlucky enough to have not quite ridden the first sample Dirty Disco frame to get into the country when it…

Why I chose disc brakes for cyclocross (and why it was a hard choice)

Picture me - 1991 and living in Sheffield as a student.  I loved my bikes and had just really started getting into mountain biking after a few years of time trialling and the odd road race.  Living in such a great place back then for off-road cycling made it very easy to go out on my MTB.  But races for mountain bikes back then were few and far between.  I'd watched the three peaks and knew people who'd ridden it, but knew I couldn't afford a cyclocross bike on my pretty…

Another £1k bike with great spec

Good review of the new Specialized Crux over on the road.cc site.

"You could buy the Crux Elite on a Saturday teatime and happily - well, maybe not happily but certainly painfully, race it Sunday morning without changing a thing. Unlike some other 'cross bikes that look like they've been cobbled together out of the parts bin to surf the current wave of popularity, or others that have a road bias with gearing that's too harsh in the mud and tyres that are rubbish it in, or…

Whyte cyclocross range - prototype to the shops

It's a hard thing to fairly review a bike and try to assess what's going on that's different to other bikes. The Whyte CX bike makes this so, so much more difficult, because it's so, so different in so many subtle ways to the core of what's going on in cyclocross. That in itself is a pretty bold statement... one of the defining qualities of cyclocross is that it's a bit on the edge and people…

Wheels are what it's about - Cyclocross tubular wheels

Whether you are new to cyclocross or an experienced competitor, you will no doubt realise the importance of having the right equipment for the sport. A quality frame and lightweight fittings are essential to give you the best chance of being easily able to carry the bike as well as being able to pick up speed again quickly following the remount.

Tyres and wheels are important decisions for any rider as the ride you get, the traction achievable and the performance of the tyres can… Continue

Whyte cyclocross prototype

Just about to start some testing of a new prototype for Whyte Bikes.  It's a slack-angled trickster of a thing that's going to love hectic rocky stuff and keep you comfy all day... more info to come I guess and see how I get on - not a final design yet so a bit of feedback yet to go back into the design process but expect something pretty similar to be in the shops next season.  Blimey - that's less than 8 months away...

See my own blog…

Cyclocross wheels delivered

We recently delivered a pair of Velocity Major Tom cyclocross wheels to Rory, a young rider based in S London. He opted for Hope Mono Road 3 hubs in red, Sapim CX Ray spokes in black and Velocity Major Tom tubular rims. The rim is 23mm wide allowing more surface area for sticking the tubular securely. The set weighed 1553g and we thought they looked great. Rory commented "they were noticeably lighter and stiffer". I have added a couple of photos below.

Wheelbase North of England Cyclocross Championships - 5th December 2010 - can you help?

Fancy a winter break in the Lakes, enjoying the fresh air and views on the shore of Lake Windermere?

Well - if you don't mind a bit of mud and welly action thrown in, you could have a lovely visit to the Brockhole Lake District visitor centre in December - as helpers are needed for the Wheelbase North of England Cyclocross championships

The championships are extended to a weekend of racing and preparation, and helpers who help with the go-ride…

New Cannondale Super X about to hit the UK

Posted a few photos last week of the Cannondale Super X that Mike Cotty (Team Wheelbase.co.uk) has managed to get his hands on. The first consignment of the bikes is on its way over to the UK at the moment so the rest of us mortals have to wait with baited breath... but having seen it in the flesh it is really some machine.

I'll be (off)road-testing one shortly, but just wanted to post a link to the…
